How to set your existing Gmail account

To send emails using your @ubud.net alias from your Gmail account, you will need to configure the “Send Mail As” feature. Since you are using a personal Gmail account and the address is a forwarding alias, the most reliable method is using Gmail’s own SMTP servers with an App Password.

Here is the step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Create a Google App Password

Google requires Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), so you have to activate 2FA for your Gmail account first before you can use your regular Gmail password for SMTP. You must create a unique 16-digit App Password.

  1. Go to your Google Account.
  2. On the left navigation panel, select Security.
  3. Under “How you sign in to Google,” make sure 2-Step Verification is turned On.
  4. Click on 2-Step Verification, scroll to the bottom, and select App Passwords.
  5. Enter a name (e.g., “Ubud Email”) and click Create.
  6. Copy and save the 16-digit code displayed in the yellow box. You will need this in Step 2.

Step 2: Configure Gmail to “Send Mail As”

  1. Open Gmail on your computer (desktop version).
  2. Click the Settings (gear icon) in the top right and select See all settings.
  3. Go to the Accounts and Import tab.
  4. In the “Send mail as” section, click Add another email address.
  5. A yellow pop-up window will appear:
    • Name: Enter the name you want recipients to see.
    • Email address: Enter yourname@ubud.net.
    • Keep “Treat as an alias” checked.
    • Click Next Step.
  6. Configure the SMTP Server settings:
    • SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
    • Port: 587
    • Username: Your full Gmail address (yourname@gmail.com).
    • Password: Paste the 16-digit App Password you generated in Step 1.
    • Connection: Select Secured connection using TLS.
  7. Click Add Account.

Step 3: Verify the Address

  1. Google will send a confirmation email to yourname@ubud.net.
  2. Since this address forwards to your Gmail, check your Gmail inbox for the verification code.
  3. Enter the code in the yellow pop-up window or click the link in the email to confirm.

Step 4: How to Send

Now, when you click Compose, you can click the “From” field to select whether you want to send the email from your @gmail.com address or your @ubud.net address.
